Objectives

The aims of the conference are to exchange and share state-of-the-art knowledge on the ecology and silviculture of beech (Fagus) forests among researchers and forest managers worldwide. Additionally, to reflect the current scientific achievements on the future directions for sustainable management of beech forests in the changing social needs and global climate.

A special emphasis will be given to findings at borders of the distribution range of the several beech species, e.g. northward expansion, genetic differentiation, and growth rings variation and to experiments highlighting the ecophysiological traits relevant to climate change phenomenon, e.g. in the regeneration phases.

After having experienced exciting excursions to rich decidous forests including virgin forest remnants in the Elbrus Mountains (in 2004; Fagus orientalis), the Carpathian Mountains (in 2006; Fagus sylvatica), and Hakkoda Mountains (in 2008; Fagus crenata), the working party participants of this symposium will visit regeneration-, tending-, thinning-, selection system- and monitoring trials of pure and mixed beech forests on their excursions.

Conference format

The conference comprises oral presentation sessions, poster session and field excursions. The oral presentation session includes keynote speakers and voluntary presentations of papers and there will be time set aside for discussions.

During the conference, two excursions are planned; one half-day excursions to the Department of Forest Sciences in Tharandt and the Tharandter Wald and a field trip with destinations in Thuringia and Lower Saxony. The excursions will focus on regeneration of Beech, Beech in mixtures and multi structural forests of Beech. Due to the changeable weather conditions for the time of the year, participants are advised to bring appropriate clothing.

The official language of the conference is English.

When making your reservations for your travel, please notice that the conference will start in Dresden (September 12) and end in Göttingen (September 17)

Semperoper in Dresden

The magnificent Semperoper dominates the Theaterplatz on the river Elbe. During your stay in Dresden you have the chance to visit the Semperopera, learn all about Dresden’s famous opera house and to enjoy one performance (on Wednesday, 14/09/2011). Up to now we do not know the specific performance. Usually you can open the playing schedule of the next season (2010/2011) in March/April.

You are invited to have a look on the homepage of this famous opera house: http://www.semperoper.de/en.html

Here you will find all relevant contact info and (not till than) march/April you will see what’s going on on Wednesday 14/09/2011.

The easiest and fastest way to get hold of your tickets is ‘Print@Home’ service. Simply purchase and print out the desired tickets yourself using the secure and straightforward Print@Home software. Online tickets are equivalent to standard tickets for all Semperoper performances.
